Internet serves as the main news source for the youth

In a recent study, the internet has ranked as the number one source of national and international news in the US. According to the Pew Research Center, people with ages 18 to 29 subscribe to news sites for their daily dose of news. In 2010 only, 65% of the respondents to a survey stated that their news came from the internet. Since 2007, the number has doubled incredibly. The number of young respondents who subscribe to TV news dropped considerably from 2007 to 2010.

When it comes to the adult population, a whopping 41% of 1500 respondents use the internet as their primary source of news. The trend of crossing over news from TV to internet is strongly indicated by the decrease in news consumption by 17% from 2007 up to 2010. those who are in their more mature age from 51 up to 64 still use the television as the major source of their news while internet and newspapers and head to head. When ages 65 and up are interviews, the internet is like a rare, distant world, accounting only to 14% while television still serves as the most popular source of news.

You can also see that social networking can be loosely accounted for this move from TV to internet. The social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter were launched in 2006 but did not have any particular significant effects until 2007 and then the social site blasted through in 2008. Now, the website has 500 million subscribers. The same goes for Twitter. There is a massive interaction between internet and TV in the past few years and with connection devices setting the standards for new media consumption, the viewing options have become more diverse.

Now, aside from mere straightforward news, one can also access multimedia content that makes news consumption more interactive and informative. Since news on TV is bound by time constraints and are usually heavily loaded with advertisements, and print is just impractical for many, digital news texts are very popular. The verification time for each news also increased in speed and with news wire services offering subscriptions and email updates, it has become more practical for one to get news with a click of a mouse than a click of a remote.

The youth and adult populations are the biggest consumers of technology since they are the ones who have more liberties to enjoy such conveniences. Devices are becoming more compact and smaller, people with old age and in their senior would not have the patience to read across a heavily populated page. Another important aspect is the personalization of news and being able to deliver news to communities, reaching to a far wider audience. This enables faster access to information just by looking at social networking sites.

The trend will still catch some more developments in the future as the number of new innovative devices and systems come along. As of the moment, news is experiencing a more interactive change that makes it even more comprehensive and easily consumable.
